Dadpe Pohe

Writer: Krutika PaiKrutika Pai

A recipe which can be a quick breakfast or a snack that comes together in less than 15 minutes. With almost no cooking involved except for tadka (tempering), dadpe pohe is a very popular version of breakfast dish, Poha, in Maharashtra.

Poha is dried and flattened rice flakes which are available in 2 variations thin and thick. For dadpe pohe, as it involves no cooking on heat, we use thin poha, for other variations of poha recipes (will post those recipes soon) thick poha is used as it involves cooking on heat.

Dadpe Pohe

Ingredients -

  • Thin Poha, 3 cups

  • Oil, 2 tbsp

  • Mustard seeds, 1 tsp

  • Cumin seeds (Jeera), 1 tsp

  • Peanuts, 1 cup

  • Turmeric, 1/2 tsp

  • Red chilli powder, 1/2 tsp

  • Salt, 1 tsp

  • Tomato, 1 small, fine chopped

  • Red Onions, 1/2, fine diced

  • Cucumber, 1 small, grated or fine chopped

  • Green chillies, 2, fine chopped

  • Curry leaves (Kadipatta), 8-10, roughly chopped

  • Lime, 2 tbsp

  • Fresh cilantro, 1/2 cup, fine chopped

  • Grated cocounut, 3 tbsp

Recipe -

  1. In a large bowl, add in chopped tomatoes, onions, cucumbers and salt. Give it a quick mix and then add in thin poha. Mix well and cover the bowl with a plate and keep aside for 10 minutes.

  2. In the meantime, take a small pan on medium heat for tadka. Add in oil and let it heat. Once heated, add in mustard seeds, let it sputter. Then, add in cumin seeds and peanuts. Stir until peanuts are slightly brown. Then add in green chilies and curry leaves. Gently stir for a few seconds. Add in turmeric and chili powder and turn off the heat.

Add the tadka to the bowl and mix everything gently.

Add in fresh cilantro and lime juice and gently give it a mix before serving.

  3. Optional but you can garnish with some fresh grated coconut or thin sev and it is ready to serve.

Enjoy your delicious, quick and easy breakfast !!!
