Matar Paneer Masala

This simple and delicious vegetarian recipe with paneer (Indian cottage cheese) and peas simmered in rich, creamy, flavourful sauce will be a winner for a healthy balanced meal served with roti or naan and rice and sure gives those comforting meal vibes !!


Matar Paneer Masala

Ingredients -

  • Paneer, 340 gm, cut 1 inch blocks

  • Peas, 1 cup, frozen or fresh

  • Red Onion, 2 medium, roughly chopped

  • Tomatoes, 2, roughly chopped

  • Ginger, 1 inch

  • Garlic, 3 cloves, rounghly chopped

  • Green chillies, 4, chopped

  • Dried Red chillies, 3

  • Oil, 3 tbsp

  • Salt, 2 tsp

  • Chilli powder, 1 tbsp

  • Cumin powder, 1 tbsp

  • Garam masala, 2 tbsp

  • Kitchen King Masala, 1 tbsp

  • Kasoore methi, 1 tsp, crushed

  • Cashews, 10, whole

  • Water, 2 cups

  • Lime juice, 2 tbsp

  • Cilantro, 1 bunch, fine chopped


Recipe -

To a pan on medium heat add 2 tbsp oil. Once oil heats add green chillies, dry red chillies, garlic cloves. Stir all for 20 seconds. Then, add roughly cut red onion, tomatoes, cashews with 1 cup water and 1 tsp salt. Cover and let cook for 10 mins. Turn off flame and let it cool for 12-15 mins then blend and make a smooth paste.


To the same pan, add 1 tbsp oil and let it heat. Then, add chilli powder, cumin powder. (Do not let the masalas to burn. So, stir a few seconds once adding masalas) and transfer the paste in. Add 1/2 cup water and 1 tsp salt.

Add in frozen green peas. Cover and let it cook for 8 mins on medium heat. Stir and add 1/2 cup water and add garam masala, kitchen king masala and give it a stir.

Add in paneer pieces and cover. Cook for 3 minutes on medium flame. (If overcooked now, paneer cubes will turn hard and dry.)

Add crushed kasoori methi with fresh chopped coriander and it is done.


Serve this with some naan bread or rotis and enjoy.
